With Orville Wright at the controls, what could be called the first military airplane took off on its maiden test flight in 1908 from the parade ground of what has become Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. The base lies adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and is home to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, better known simply as The Old Guard, as well as the U.S. Army Band and a variety of Army and Marine Corps units.
